Lightning, the visible discharge of electricity that occurs when a region of a cloud acquires an excess electrical charge, either positive or negative, sufficient to break down the resistance of air. It can occur within the cloud, between clouds, between the cloud and the air, or between the cloud and the ground.

What causes thunder? Lightning causes thunder! Energy from a lightning channel heats the air briefly to around 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, much hotter than the surface of the sun. This causes the air to explode outward.
You need cold air and warm air. When they meet, the warm air goes up. It makes thunderstorm clouds! The cold air has ice crystals. The warm air has water droplets. During the storm, the droplets and crystals bump together and move apart in the air. This rubbing makes static electrical charges in the clouds.

The extremely high temperatures generated heat the air molecules to a state of incandescence (white hot) such that they emit a vivid white light. At the same time, nitrogen gas (the dominant gas in the atmosphere) is stimulated to luminesce, producing bright blue-white.
Thunder and Lightning
Lightning happens when the negative charges (electrons) in the bottom of the cloud are attracted to the positive charges (protons) in the ground. The accumulation of electric charges must be great enough to overcome the insulating properties of the air.
Lightning is the electrical discharge between positively and negatively charged regions within clouds. The electrical discharge serves as an equalization process between the charged regions, and can travel from cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, or cloud-to-air. Visually, lightning is comprised of bright flashes of light called strokes.
